We (Dennen & Rutledge) have a forthcoming article in TechTrends titled The embedded lesson approach to social media research: Researching online phenomena in an authentic offline setting.
Basically this manuscript describes the research approach that we developed for Year 1 of our project, where we visited two classrooms for three 50-minute class sessions. During these class sessions we taught lessons about social media concepts while simultaneously collecting data from the students about their social media use as it relates to these very same concepts.
To provide more context and assist with replication of this approach, here are some of the materials that we used:
- Lesson Plan / Overview
- Guiding Questions [Day 1 Focus Groups / Class Discussion]
- Community Activity Worksheet and Guiding Questions [Day 2]
- Tool / Network Activity Worksheet and Guiding Questions [Day 3]
